This weekend British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) is hosting its Flag Football Festival 2024.

Interest among universities this year has been intense and a total of 12 teams representing 10 different institutions will participate in the event taking place at Brunel University Sports Park on Sunday (28 April) from 9am.

BUCS American Football Coordinator, Tonye Dobuko said: “This event is a great platform to let people know what is going on at BUCS, to grow the presence of Flag and highlight that it is something we are taking seriously. We are hoping events like these can encourage universities to start their own flag programmes.”

BAFA Operations Manager Amanda McDonald said: “We are encouraged by the ongoing commitment within British Colleges and Universities Sport (BUCS) to promote participation in Flag Football at Higher Education level. It is an accessible and inclusive sport and the growth in interest is clearly apparent – not least because it is now part of the Olympic family.

“We are working hard to develop Women’s and Men’s programmes which are strong enough not only to qualify for, but also medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. We remain in ongoing dialogue with BUCS in regard to building on the support they already give – by establishing Flag Football leagues across university sport to further boost the pipeline of talent that is emerging.”

The universities represented are – Anglia Ruskin, Brunel, City, Kingston, Oxford Brookes, Reading, Royal Holloway, Surrey, UCL and East Anglia.
