Premier and Tier 1 finals to be curtain raiser for BUCS Big Wednesday

Thursday, January 30, 2020

The BUCS American Football National Championship Final(Premier Tier) and Trophy Final (Division 1) will take place in the evening of Tuesday 24 March 2020 in Nottingham, acting as a curtain raiser for BUCS Big Wednesday.

The date of the two finals has changed from Wednesday 25 March as a result of direct feedback from university players and coaches, and professional staff. Offering the best possible experience for the student-athletes is BAFA's number one priority, and staging the games on Wednesday 25 March would have involved playing on a grass pitch off-site, potentially reducing the quality of performance on display and overall atmosphere.

Moving the games to Tuesday evening ensures they will be played on the excellent University of Nottingham 3G pitch, while also integrating British American Football further within the university sport sector and enabling our athletes to compete as part of the biggest team sporting event in the university calendar.

Marcus Boswell, BUCS Competition Commission Lead at BAFA, said:

"After continuous discussion between BAFA and BUCS since the confirmation of the sport’s inclusion into the BUCS Big Wednesday programme, we are excited at the prospect of what these Tuesday evening fixtures can offer.

"Maintaining a high standard of facility with the University of Nottingham’s venue, whilst receiving the many added benefits of being part of the wider event, should make for a fantastic spectacle, and one which we hope will offer the highest level of enhanced experience for students playing in the Finals."

The Trophy Final will kick off at 16.00, with the National Championship Final at 19.45. Both games will be live streamed.
