The British American Football Association has today confirmed that the nation will play host to the Russian women's national team in a crucial playoff game which will determine whether or not the national team will compete in the European Championship in Spain in the summer of 2015.
Earlier this year BAFA submitted an expression of interest to IFAF Europe, the continent's governing body, to compete in the 2015 European Championship due to be staged in Spain. The tournament which has six berths received seven entrants which has resulted in a request for a qualification round for two nations - Great Britain and Russia.
BAFA Chairman Charles Macnamara welcomed today's decision of the Board of Directors to formally enter the team into the Championships and the agreement to host Russia.
'Women's football has made tremendous progress in a relatively short period of time. We have seen first hand the skill and hard work of the Great Britain coaching staff and the high level of performance from across the team. We have also seen a great culture developing across the emerging clubs, embracing both a fabulous work ethic and desire to continuously improve. We see today's decision to sanction potentially a qualification game and a tournament entry as both an investment in performance and critically, an investment in wider game development for women's football.'
Macanamara concluded 'We look forward to hosting our Russian counterparts. We have great admiration for what they are seeking to achieve with the women's game in their country and we have no doubt they will prove challenging opponents.'
BAFA is now in discussions with Russia on when and where the game will be hosted.
