The Great Britain Women’s Contact team suffered an agonising 3-6 overtime defeat to Finland in their opening game of the 2025/26 IFAF European Championship in Coventry.
Both sides’ offensive units struggled to build any momentum throughout the game, which finished 0-0 at the end of the fourth quarter.
Great Britain’s defense held firm from start to finish, with defensive line standouts Sarah-Jane Brain and Zoe John making big stops to put the ball back in British hands.
Aside from individual moments of brilliance from running back Stephanie Wyant and receiver Samantha Read, however, the British offense had little to write home about at Butts Park Arena.
As the game moved to overtime it was Great Britain that struck first through a 28-yard field goal by captain Eilidh Currie, but Finland rallied with the ball to punch through for a game-winning touchdown.
Next up for Great Britain Women is a trip to Spain on October 18 as they take on the defending European champions and aim to get their international campaign back on track.
