The Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 will showcase the very best talent in American football after the NFL announced that its players may compete in the flag football competition.

The NFL features players representing over 70 countries through its Heritage Programme and the International Player Pathway (IPP).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said: “It’s an incredible honour for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport.”

IFAF president Pierre Trochet said: “[This] promises to add another dimension to what is already shaping up to be a game-changing debut for Flag Football at the Olympic Games.”

“The National Football League is home to the biggest stars in American football, who come from more and more countries, and now have the opportunity to shine on the greatest stage in world sport, showcasing everything that makes flag football a genuine worldwide phenomenon.”

BAFA CEO Chad Ehlertsen said: ”Flag Football is recognised as an elite sport and this decision reinforces its growing stature.

“To be the best requires the platform to compete against the best – and also to have the opportunity to draw on the finest talents that a nation produces.

“This presents a tremendous opportunity to further support the development of American football in Great Britain.”

When will the Flag Football competition at LA 2028 take place?

While the full Games schedule has not been confirmed, the Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games will take place between 14 and 30 July 2028.

Where will the Flag Football competition at LA 2028 be held?

Flag Football at the Los Angeles Olympic Games will be held at The Stadium in Exposition Park. Located adjacent to the LA Memorial Coliseum, The Stadium is Los Angeles’ newest open-air stadium and is framed by views of the Downtown Los Angeles skyline.

How many teams will compete in Flag Football at LA 2028?

Six women’s teams and six men’s teams will compete in Flag Football at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Each team will be composed of 10 players.
