The Women’s Flag Football League (WFFL) is ramping up through game day two as the Coventry Panthers and East Kilbride Pirates Black top their respective divisions.

All of the WFFL’s 17 teams have now gotten their seasons underway with tournaments in Norwich, Loughborough, Sheffield and Glasgow taking place earlier this month.

In the Highland and North Conference (HNC), the East Kilbride Pirates Black emerge with a perfect 6-0 record, followed closely by the Aberdeen Snowcasts and Leeds Samurai, both 4-1.

In the Midlands and South Conference (MSC), the Coventry Panthers made good on their busy start to the season, sitting at 7-0, while their city rivals Coventry Cougars emerged 4-0 after starting their season a week later.

Speaking after the tournament, Cougars and Great Britain defensive back Kellie Barrett shared her excitement for the start of the season.

“It was a good game day, to come away with four wins,” Barrett said.

“We had some challenges throughout the day. Obviously, we’re missing our starting quarterback, but we just rolled with it. At the end today, we come away with four wins. We’ve learned lessons, we’ll go back, we’ll regroup and go again.”

With new teams joining the WFFL amid the rising popularity of the sport in the UK, Barrett said she was encouraged to see fresh faces in 2024.

“It’s really exciting because that’s where we’re seeing the growth and that’s what we need to continue to see.

“Obviously it’s nice to see new faces, see the development, but I’m really excited to get to see some different schemes and, hopefully, and some challenges. It’s good fun.”
