Great Britain men fell short to a formidable German side in their IFAF European Championship qualifier at Butts Park Arena, Coventry.

Facing the four-time European champions, Jason Scott’s Lions knew they were in for a stern test in their bid to secure a spot in next season’s European Championship finals. Germany, fresh off a ten-year absence from the international scene, arrived with a hunger to reclaim their former glory, highlighting the depth of the challenge for GB – and ran out 49-11 victors.

The Lions showed early promise when a 43-yard field goal from Alex Lenkowski trimmed Germany’s lead to 7-3. However, it was not until the final quarter that the 700-strong Butts Park crowd had more reason to cheer. Running back Andy Owusu, continuing his strong personal form, powered in for a touchdown after getting the ball to within one yard on the preceding play. This marked his third touchdown in just a week, having scored two in the close defeat to Sweden the previous Sunday.

Despite flashes of brilliance, GB was ultimately unable to overcome Germany’s dominance, leaving them to regroup for the next stage of their campaign in 2025. Great Britain will now move on to placement matchups in 2025, having also narrowly lost to Sweden in their previous fixture.
