Great Britain’s Women’s and Men’s teams each recorded perfect starts in their opening group games at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Finland. Both squads secured back-to-back victories and are already well placed to progress to the knockout phase commencing on Wednesday.
Live streaming of the tournament continues at www.IFAF.TV with game scores available at the event website www.FlagWC24.com – which will also feature game stats.
GB men set the tone in one of the opening games of the tournament – defeating Georgia 48-12. The women matched this intensity with a 46-6 victory over Czechia. In the afternoon games the free-scoring GB women chalk up an unanswered 41 points against Israel and the men won a close encounter over Sweden, beating the Scandinavians 32-24. On Day Two both teams face stiff tests. GB men will face Germany, a team ranked third in the world while GB Women take on Panama.
After the triumphant opening, Centre, Phoebe Schecter said: “Day One was a big success for us – allowing only six points across the two games against Czechia and Israel is something we can draw a lot of positives from. Day Two provides a new challenge playing Panama. This will be the biggest test to date for the GB Women, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
Spencer Brown who can feature as Centre, WR or DB for GB men said: “I am really excited to line up against Germany. They play a traditional style of Offense with a single, primary QB, which is a great match up and test for us.”
