GB Lions U17s squad named

This inaugural squad will showcase players from 21 different teams and face a baptism of fire in the guise of Austria who are ranked number one at U19 level in Europe. Not a single player in the GB squad has ever played an 11-a-side game.

The game marks the start of a new era in player development as part of the National Programme. Initially the U17s were set-up by former U19 Head Coach, Jason Henry of London Blitz as part of a 5 year development plan to ultimately improve the U19 Lions Squad.

Interim Head Coach, Damon Kirby said: “I expect nothing less than the toughest game these players have ever faced. I am very lucky to have such an exceptional coaching team who have been amazing in preparing both the travelling squad and the wider development squad.

“I am confident that the bumpy journey that we have endured thus far has equipped us well for anything that we might encounter in Vienna.”

U16 contact American football has been played in the UK since 2004 and has crowned 19 National Champions at the 5-a-side format. From Clyde Valley to the current champions, Rushmoor Knights.
