The 5 Versus 5 Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Hertfordshire, will feature four teams, three of which are part of recent Championship winning programmes in the current BUAFL National Championships.
Head of British Universities Women’s Football Dr Elesa Zehndorfer said: "Hopefully, if we set this up right and we expand the right way, the women’s game will become an increasing part of the football landscape in Great Britain."
Dr Zehndorfer continued “We are receiving statements of interest from a number of universities where women are interested in forming teams, both for Flag and for contact football. The level of interest has forced us to take a step back and re-assess how we roll out the competitions for the 2012-13 season and beyond.”
BAFA Director for Student Football Andy Fuller said: "I am extremely confident that the inaugural BAFA’s British University Women’s Championships will be a great success and moreover, will provide a tremendous opportunity to learn more about how we further build the foundations for the Women’s game.”
