Head Coach Damian Anderson and his Defensive Coordinator Scott Rowe and Offensive Coordinator Graham Kelly, worked alongside BAFA National Programme Committee members and have selected the following Junior Team additions: Marco Fasulo (Defensive Line), Francis Hatega (Linebackers), Simon Purcell (Defensive Backs), Ben Johnson (Offensive Line), Jay Alexander (Running Backs), Clive Palumbo (Wide Receivers) and Jonathan Rooney (Quarterbacks).
Adult Head Coach Mike Callan and his Defensive Coordinator Wayne Hill and Offensive Coordinator Andy Mackintosh, worked alongside BAFA National Programme Committee members and have selected the following Adult Team additions: Mark Moss (Defensive Line), Ross Templeton (Linebackers), Martin Hilton (Defensive Backs), Anthony Fitzpatrick (Offensive Line), Nick Rockell (Running Backs), Andy Sweeney (Wide Receivers) and Ryan Baker (Tight Ends).
Junior Team Bios:
Marco Fasulo has been appointed to work with the Defensive Line of the Junior Team. Coach Fasulo currently is Defensive Coordinator at the Cambridgeshire Cats Junior Team, and has been working with the Cats since his retirement as a player in 2004. His playing career includes being a stand-out defensive end on the 2004 EFAF Group B championship Great Britain Lions Team and five Britbowl Championships with the London Olympians.
Francis Hatega has been appointed to work with the Linebackers of the Junior Team. He has been working in an advisory capacity with National Programme staff over the past 4 years, drawing upon his experiences from his playing days. As an outstanding Linebacker/Defensive Back, he played for the England Monarchs and the Great Britain Lions. With the dominant London Olympians, he won eight Britbowl Championships, including being one of only two defensive Britbowl MVPs.
Simon Purcell has been appointed to work with the Defensive Backs of the Junior Team. Coach Purcell returns in this position from the previous Junior coaching staff (2009-2010). He currently is the Defensive Coordinator at the Lancashire Wolverines, working with both Adult and Junior teams, within the Lancashire Academy of American Football. He also represented previous Great Britain Junior teams in the European Junior Championships.
Ben Johnson has been appointed to work with the Offensive Line of the Junior Team Line. Coach Johnson is Head Coach of the University of Newcastle Raiders, and has led the team to six consecutive playoff appearances. He was awarded the Coaches Association’s (BAFCA) Coach of the Year Award in 2007 for his work within University Football.
Jay Alexander has been appointed to work with the Running Backs of the Junior Team. Coach Alexander was recently Head Coach of the Tamworth Phoenix, and led them to the playoffs in their first year in the National Leagues’ Premier Division. He was BAFCA Coach of the Year in 2010, and has also worked with Running Backs at the University of Birmingham and with the Great Britain Universities Team. As a player, Coach Alexander was a standout Running Back himself, at Birmingham and Loughborough Universities and the Yorkshire Rams.
Clive Palumbo has been appointed to work with the Wide Receivers of the Junior Team. Coach Palumbo has coached at both University and Adult level, alongside a stellar playing career. He coached Wide Receivers at Greenwich University and the Kent Exiles. As a player, he has been a standout Wide Receiver for the London Olympians (during their “Decade of Dominance”, including two Britbowl MVP awards, and a League MVP award), London Blitz and the Great Britain Lions.
Jonathan Rooney has been appointed to work with the Quarterbacks of the Junior Team. Coach Rooney coaches at the University of Newcastle Raiders, and has fulfilled a multiple of roles in his time there, including Offensive Coordinator. He has also coached with the Gateshead Senators in the BAFA National Leagues. In addition, he represented the Great Britain Universities Team. He is currently a qualified Physical Education Teacher.
Adult Team Bios:
Mark Moss has been appointed to work with the Defensive Line of the Adult Team. Coach Moss is currently the Head Coach of the London Blitz, where he is accumulating a list of achievements that is only matched by a handful of coaches in British American Football. Under his tenure, the London Blitz has become 2011 EFAF Cup Winners, current Britbowl Champions, and Britbowl Champions in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Coach Moss was BAFCA Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2009. He has been in his current role for six years, and previously coached Defensive Line at the London Blitz, Chiltern (now Watford) Cheetahs, Hertfordshire Stags and Luton Huskers Juniors.
Ross Templeton has been appointed to work with the Linebackers of the Adult Team. Coach Templeton is currently Defensive Coordinator at the East Kilbride Pirates, who won the 2011 Division One Championship in 2011. He has been working closely with their Defensive Backs since 2001. He is also Head Coach of the Pirates’ Junior Team, which was established in 2010. As Defensive Coordinator at the University of Glasgow Lions, he helped the team to a College Bowl appearance in 2005. As a player, he was a standout Linebacker for the East Kilbride Pirates teams that reached the Britbowl final in 2001 and 2003, and also represented the Great Britain Junior team in 1999-2000.
Martin Hilton has been appointed to work with the Defensive Backs of the Adult Team. Coach Hilton is currently Defensive Coordinator at the Tamworth Phoenix and has worked closely with their Defensive Backs over the past four seasons. He has also coached Defensive Backs at Loughborough University since 2001. He was a General Coaching Assistant on the Great Britain Lions Adult Team from 2009, so the step up to the positional coach is a natural progression.
Anthony Fitzpatrick has been appointed to work with the Offensive Line of the Adult Team. Coach Fitzpatrick has over a decade of coaching experience, and is currently the Offensive Coordinator at the Bedfordshire Blue Raiders. He was Offensive Line Coach at the London Blitz from 2009-11, where the team achieved three consecutive Britbowl National Championships and the 2011 EFAF Cup. He also coached the Offensive Line at Hertfordshire University, coordinating their Offense in 2005-2007, a period which saw the Hurricanes winning the University National Championship.
Nick Rockell has been appointed to work with the Running Backs of the Adult Team. Coach Rockell coached Running Backs at the London Blitz in 2011, as the team dominated the BAFA National League’s Premier Division and won the EFAF Cup. He returned to the Blitz following several years at the Norwich Devils, where he was Head Coach from 2007-2009. A previous BAFCA Coach of the Year winner, he was previously Head Coach at the London Blitz from 2003-2005, where he put in place firm foundations for the teams’ successes. He has also coached at the University of East Anglia, Chiltern (now Watford) Cheetahs, Hertfordshire Stags and Luton Huskers Juniors.
Andy Sweeney has been appointed to work with the Wide Receivers of the Adult Team. Coach Sweeney currently coaches at the Tamworth Phoenix after a six year absence from the sidelines. He was, at the time of his temporary hiatus, University Football’s most successful coaches achieving 100 victories before any other, and with three University Championships, his Loughborough Aces were arguably the dominant team in University football in the 1990’s. Coach Sweeney was also Offensive Coordinator for the Great Britain Universities Team from 1995-98 and BAFCA Coach of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 2002. He is also a former President of the Coaches Association. As a player he was a standout Running Back for the Leicester Panthers.
Ryan Baker has been appointed to work with the Tight Ends of the Adult Team. Coach Baker has been Assistant Head Coach at the University of Birmingham Lions since 2005, and specialises on the Offensive side of the ball. During his time, the Birmingham Lions has won back-to-back University Championships, and he has worked directly with Offensive Line and Quarterbacks, making him the ideal appointment. He previously coached Tight Ends for the Great Britain Junior Team in 2009, and Offensive Line at the Tamworth Phoenix Adult and Junior Teams.
The final position to be coached will be Quarterbacks, which will come directly under the control of Offensive Coordinator Andy Mackintosh (whose details were highlighted in the previous press release - http://www.britishamericanfootball.org/news.aspx?id=54 ).
